Home, Interior Design: What does “Custom Designed” Really Mean?

The word “custom” is used quite often in the home improvement and interior design category. To truly offer custom designed service, your interior designer or contractor should be creating unique designs and using a variety of different vendors to meet your specific needs. For example; if you use a designer from a Big Box store or a home interior store, they will most likely use products and materials from their store. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but whether it’s cabinets, flooring, carpeting, paint, wall coverings or décor items, you want the best options and quality to meet your exact needs, not cookie cutter colors or brands.

Below are some examples of how custom design should work.

Cabinets made to the exact dimensions of the space in your kitchen or bathroom. Making off the shelf units conform is not the same.

Rugs: You should be able to choose the color and design of a rug to match your color scheme and fit exactly in the area you’ve designated.

Carpet: Picking your color and style from a sample can work great. On the other hand, choosing the exact color and making it truly custom is another option.

Wallpaper or wall coverings: These days, it’s actually possible to choose a pattern or fabric you like and have the wallpaper made to match exactly.

Paint: These days, the hardware or big box store can match just about any color you choose for your walls. Your interior designer should make sure the paint quality, durability and finish, match your needs.

Truly custom work draws from the best solution, the best vendor, the best or highest quality product, not what’s in stock.
